Resident Voices: Why Creativity Matters
When current resident Diane D. was searching for the right retirement community, she had one clear goal: to stay engaged with her art. And Friendship Village delivered.
“Don and I selected FVT after 2 years of searching for a CCRC with multiple art studios, not one craft room. Thank God we kept looking. FVT has 6 professional studios … plus room for others to pursue their interests.” – Diane, resident
She’s not alone. Many seniors move here not just for comfort and care, but for inspiration. Creativity is woven into the rhythm of the community, whether through scheduled workshops or spontaneous studio time.
Richard’s Weaving Passion: From Hobby to Daily Joy
One of our most inspiring resident stories comes from Richard, who transformed his interest in weaving into a passion during his retirement years. Helen, a friend of Richard’s mother and founder of the weaving studio at Friendship Village, taught him the art of weaving.
When reflecting on Helen’s willingness to teach him, Richard recalls, “She welcomed this opportunity [to teach and foster creativity] … I think when we say ‘Friendship’ Village, that’s really what it’s all about.”
This kind of daily access and encouragement makes a lasting difference. It turns interests into passions and hobbies into community-building moments.
More Than Art – It’s Expression, Connection and Joy
While our amenities draw artists in, it’s the creative culture that keeps them fulfilled. Friendship Village Tempe partners with local organizations and brings in guest artists, musicians and educators to keep programming fresh and dynamic. Resident-led art shows and concerts celebrate every level of talent – from lifelong professionals to curious beginners.
We’ve also created a culture of intergenerational engagement, giving residents the opportunity to share their skills and stories with younger artists and volunteers – just like Helen did with Richard.
