World Health Day 2017 Holds Special Meaning for Friendship Village Tempe

World Health Day is upon us (April 7), and this year’s theme, depression, is one of the most important mental health issues of our time. Countless Americans report suffering from depression, and the elderly are especially susceptible. As we age, the risk of isolation becomes greater, leading to the possibility of lonely feelings that can impact quality of life.

At senior living communities like Friendship Village, residents have the options, outlets and support they need to maintain good mental health as they age. New friendships and activities greatly lessen the odds of feeling isolated, residents are much more likely to engage in regular exercise.

“The benefits of choosing a community like Friendship Village Tempe go right to the heart of the best ways we know of to prevent depression,” said executive director Cole Marvin. “When we stay in our homes, the odds go up that we’ll spend increasingly more time alone. In a community setting, we can’t help but form new bonds that keep us from feeling isolated. There’s a friend around every corner.”

In a community setting like Friendship Village, socialization has proven benefits:

  • Helps fight off depression and isolation.
  • Reduces stress and health complications from high blood pressure, cardiovascular conditions or dementia.
  • Boosts the immune system to help fight off illnesses.
  • Provides a sense of purpose and a place to belong.
  • Increases self-esteem
  • Creates a more positive outlook on life, in general.
  • Strengthens relationships with spouses, family members and friends.

We’re proud of the small role we play in helping bring to light a mental health issue that affects so many of our friends and neighbors. Friendship Village is more than just a name. It’s who we strive to be each and every day.
