For much of American history, when salutes were given to generals, those generals were men. By the latter half of the 20th century, however, things were changing, and those changes opened doors for Maralin Coffinger. Serving in the Air Force from 1963 to 1989, Coffiner, now a resident at Friendship Village Tempe, eventually reached the rank of brigadier general. She was among the first women to attain what was once unattainable.
Coffinger spent time in Vietnam during the U.S. conflict there, assisting the South Vietnamese with updating their data system and advising women in the Vietnamese Air Force. She also spent time in the Middle East later in her career.
Friendship Village Tempe is committed to honoring the many veterans who now call the community home. Coffinger’s fellow residents say they admire her courage, and the advances she helped obtain for women in the armed forces. While she says she doesn’t consider herself a champion of women’s issues, Coffinger is proud of her service and the strides women have made toward equality in the military.
